The global aquaculture, or fish farming, industry is not a solution to overfishing and must dramatically change in order to become sustainable, says a new Greenpeace report.
Challenging the Aquaculture Industry on Sustainability, which was presented to the 2008 Seafood Summit in Barcelona today, documents how fish farming is damaging marine and freshwater ecosystems by destroying coasts to make way for ponds, polluting water with fecal waste and depleting wild fish caught for feed and farm stock.

La asociación ecologista WWF/Adena presentó ayer en Barcelona una campaña que llevará a toda España para evitar el consumo de 15 peces en peligro y repartió unas 5.000 guías de compra responsable de pescados y mariscos entre los consumidores. Adena aprovechará los días del Seafood Summit, el encuentro anual de representantes del sector que intenta poner coto a la devastación pesquera, y que se celebrará desde mañana hasta el miércoles en Barcelona, para repartir otros 5.000 ejemplares de la guía del bolsillo en la que se especifican las especies de pescado que se recomiendan consumir (15), las que su captura supone cierto riesgo al medioambiente (23) y aquellas que su compra contribuye a su devastación (15).
