EcoFish Inc. - 2006 Seafood Champion

A New Hampshire-based seafood distributor, EcoFish was created in 1999 with the goal of providing a source of all-natural, premium quality seafood from environmentally sustainable fisheries. Over the past decade, and with the recent capital investment by the Sea Change Investment Fund, EcoFish has significantly expanded its operations and can now be found in over 1,000 grocery and natural food stores, and more than 150 restaurants throughout the United States. In addition, EcoFish has become a new member of the Super Target family where its products are now available to a substantial and growing consumer base throughout the country. EcoFish has also begun distribution of its Organic Shrimp line, which is the first nationally distributed certified form of organic shrimp available in American retail stores.

Sustainability is at the heart of EcoFish’s mission and business plan. The company seeks to bring all members of the seafood community together in reaching its “Triple Bottom Line” by promoting the operation of a profitable business that is also responsible to its community and the environment. EcoFish is setting a positive example for corporate America through its promotion of high quality, sustainably harvested, healthy and delicious seafood. They promote the consumption of both wild and farmed fish while dissuading consumers from over-exploited fisheries.

EcoFish has assembled a Seafood Advisory Board, made up of the world’s leading marine conservation scientists, to assist in guiding its procurement decisions. In terms of wild species the board seeks to ensure that the species in question has, and will continue to have, healthy population levels. The board also ensures proper fishery management characteristics, bycatch avoidance methods, and minimal habitat impact for all fisheries represented in the company’s product line. All farmed products sold by EcoFish are ensured to be from farms that limit the possibility of escape, address habitat and chemical contamination issues, and ensure the minimization of fishmeal use.

Through its strong ideals and community focus, EcoFish has become a powerful small business that has made great strides in the promotion of sustainable fishing techniques while providing a constant supply of healthy, fresh, and high quality seafood products.
