Alliance Research on the European Seafood Marketplace

seafood training at London's Billingsgate marketSince its inception in 2001, Seafood Choices Alliance has undertaken research to better understand consumers' and seafood professionals' perceptions when it comes to buying seafood, with the goal of painting a clear picture of the sustainable seafood marketplace. Keep reading for a summary of the European marketplace research commissioned by the Alliance.

The Market for Sustainable Seafood

Enjoying seafood used to be a simple pleasure. Most of us who appreciate the bounty of the ocean can name a favourite recipe or a preferred species. Not surprisingly, one of the greatest connections we have with the ocean is through the seafood on our plate. Yet this once-simple source of enjoyment has become increasingly complicated. Now more than ever, consumers and seafood professionals want to know where their seafood is coming from and how it was caught or cultivated. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Europe, the destination for 40% of the world’s seafood exports.

To meet the need for more information about seafood in the European marketplace, the Alliance has released two reports (one an overview of the European market; the other an in-depth look at the UK - a key country for seafood consumption and production) that include data for landings, aquaculture production, seafood consumption and import/export figures.

"As the reports show, Europe is the largest seafood importer in the world and businesses here are fast becoming global leaders on the sustainability issue," says Elisabeth Vallet, European Programme Manager. "By encouraging progress and working together, we can help preserve the ocean resources and biodiversity for future generations."

These reports pair industry data with public opinion polling of seafood professionals and consumers to reveal an increasingly dynamic marketplace that can potentially shift towards mainstream sustainability.

In this first-ever poll of European consumers, supermarkets, chefs and restaurateurs on attitudes toward seafood and the ocean, 79% said that the environmental impact of seafood is an important factor in their purchasing decisions. 86% of consumers would prefer to buy seafood that is labelled as environmentally responsible; 40% are willing to pay 5-10% more for seafood identified as eco-friendly. And 95% of consumers and 85% of seafood professionals say they want more information about how to buy sustainable seafood.

The complete research reports are available in English, Spanish, and German (see below).
