Advancing the market for sustainable seafood

Seafood Choices Alliance is an international association for sustainable seafood. Founded in the United States in 2001, the Alliance helps the seafood industry—from fishermen and fish farmers to distributors, wholesalers, retailers and restaurants—to make the seafood marketplace environmentally and economically sustainable. There is a growing interest worldwide in environmentally responsible seafood. Seafood Choices Alliance mobilizes and connects the world’s leading voices in support of a sustainable supply of seafood choices, highlighting the need for a global solution to threats facing the ocean.

MISSION

Harnessing market forces around the globe in support of ocean conservation

Seafood Choices brings together the leaders from the seafood and restaurant industries, conservation organizations and education institutions, enabling them to advance actions that reflect their shared concern for the long term supply of seafood and the long term health of the ocean environment.

Our vision is a world where all those affiliated with the seafood industry—from fishermen, fish farmers and distributors, to retailers, restaurants and consumers—act on the belief that a healthy ocean is vital to human life and essential to ensuring a sustainable supply of seafood for all to enjoy.

SIGNATURE PROJECTS

Throughout the calendar year, Seafood Choices Alliance organizes networking events, business roundtables, and produces supplier/buyer resources.

• Seafood Summit—The only annual event devoted to sustainable seafood issues, bringing together the global leaders from the seafood industry and conservation community.
• GRI Seafood Workshops—A partnership between the Alliance and the Global Reporting Initiative, the GRI Seafood Workshops will enable companies and stakeholders in the seafood processing sector to better measure and communicate progress on sustainability (i.e. economic, environmental and social performance).
• Seafood Champion Awards—The Alliance recognizes a handful of individuals or companies each year for outstanding leadership in advancing the market for sustainable seafood.
• Publications and Market Resarch—Professional buyer's guides for the North American and French-speaking European markets. The species information contained in Sourcing Seafood also forms the basis of our Smart Choices online database. And our Marketplace for Sustainable Seafood series provides a snapshot of seafood supply and demand as well as consumer and purveyor attitudes towards sustainability.
